Meet Alexandra Dillon!

by | Feb 10, 2018 | Art, Artists

A native of Los Angeles, Alexandra Dillon received her B.A. in film from UCLA, then returned to her lifelong passion for making art. Her love of Old Master painting led her to study classical realism in Florence, Italy, then New Orleans, finally settling in Venice, CA. She has since appeared in group and solo shows in Los Angeles. Her current work on found objects and paintbrushes has gone viral on Instagram and earned her an international reputation for edgy surrealism and inventive work on found objects.

Tagline: Give yourself and your work a Tagline and tell us why.
Portraits on found objects and psychological surrealism.

Rest: How do you spend your time off?
Long walks on mountain trails.

Influence: How do you hope to affect your audience?
With the brush portraits, I strive to find character and convey a real sense of the person. The works on tools are more complex and allude to inner motivations and powerful emotions. They are intended to make you think.

Back: If you could go Back and choose a past literary/art/music movement to be a part of, which would you choose?
I’m crazy about ancient art, Baroque and Renaissance portraits, Goya, Art Deco, Picasso….how can I choose? I love it all.

Energy: What fires you up?
Travels in Italy, thrift store finds, Led Zeppelin played loud.

Los Angeles: Where is your favorite place in Los Angeles and why?
I’m an L.A. native and I think this is the most creative city in the world. I adore the beach. It’s the very edge of western civilization!

Advice: What is the best Advice you’ve received? What is the best advice you can give?
Life is too short to spend time worrying. Spend more time dancing.

Aura: How would you describe your Aura, style, etc.?
Old soul, snappy dresser.

Room: Where in your home do you work? If not in your home, where do you feel most compelled to create?
I prefer to work in the studio where I’m not distracted by dishes in the sink.

Tools: What Tools do you prefer to work with, physically and otherwise?
I work in both acrylics and oils on found objects.

Indulgence: What is your favorite Indulgence? Do you cook? What is your specialty meal? What is your favorite restaurant in LA where you indulge yourself?
I love to cook and I’m getting pretty good at Indian food. I really like the tacos from the truck on Rose, and I enjoy all the restaurants on Sawtelle.

Special: Who or what holds a Special place in your heart? How does this factor into your creative process?
People are what interest me. We are miraculous and complex creatures and that is the story I want to tell.

Time: What is your all-time favorite piece of art that you created and why?
I’m pretty keen on that Screaming Cleaver!

Thank you Alexandra!
