“Back in school for the winter but we’re not gonna cry / I’ve got you in my dorm bed so to hell with life”
The sun-soaked and sprawling landscape that is Los Angeles breeds nostalgia, especially for New York transplants. Sizzy Rocket, 25, a former Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music student familiarized herself with uptempo life, love, and lust in the City That Never Sleeps. “I wrote this song about a weekend I spent with an ex girlfriend of mine…it was the beginning of our relationship and we were just inseparable. We spent the whole time next to each other in bed, where time seems to go by more slowly…it’s almost as if you can physically feel yourself falling for that person.”
“The Weekend,” written in Sizzy’s San Fernando Valley bedroom, swells with audible pangs of nostalgia. While the track is wholly raw and personal, the verses incorporate a coffee table aspect; it’s as if you’re sitting across from Sizzy as she recounts her time with this girl. The track’s visions of snowy Manhattan roof tops and faded red solo cups evoke the cross-coastal memory of love on the weekend.
