FRIEZE LOS ANGELES

2020

Year 2: PARAMOUNT STUDIO LOT – Will it ever be the same.

FRIEZE LOS ANGELES 2020

First of all, FRIEZE LA takes place at Paramount Pictures Studios, the historic studio lot located right her in Hollywood. It largely focuses on contemporary art and celebrates the exceptionally dynamic culture of LA and its global contributions to the visual arts.

The full program at Frieze Los Angeles brings together around 70 of the most significant and forward-thinking galleries from across the city and around the world. The fair experience happenings take place across the city.

The fair attracted 35,000 visitors during its four days at Paramount Pictures Studios, which featured 75 local and international galleries in addition to unique artist commissions as part of Frieze Projects and the Artist Street Fair on the Paramount Pictures Backlot.

Bettina Korek, Executive Director of Frieze Los Angeles, said, ‘After just two years, it is already hard to imagine Los Angeles without an annual Frieze Week. Frieze Los Angeles is the heart of a moment that galvanizes creative communities across the city.

While the exhibitors, artist-run spaces, nonprofit organizations and artists onsite at Paramount only scratch the surface of L.A.’s multifaceted cultural scene, new models we’ve tested this year like the Artist Street Fair have been a resounding success.

Attendees included Jim Gianopulos, CEO of Paramount Pictures, said, ‘It was an honor once again for us to host Frieze L.A. on the Paramount lot, and see such an outpouring of enthusiasm for this gathering of so many brilliant artists and influential galleries.’

Also in attendance was Los Angeles County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas said ‘The success of Frieze L.A. in its second year is another indication and market signal of L.A. County’s well-earned role as a leader of the creative economy whose impact is felt across the globe. Frankly, the creative economy and events like Frieze represent one of our greatest opportunities for the future.

FRIEZE featured the work of George Rodriguez on the cover.

FRIEZE Week was proud to have cast a wide net with contributions from local artists, curators, writers and even entertainment royalty. We saw LL Cool J and Jenifer Lopez with hubby just to name a few. They also covered photography legend George Rodriguez. At first glance an image redolent of old Hollywood glamour, Rodriguez also captures behind the scenes workers, subtly foregrounding issues of labor and social identity.

The Opening Preview on Thursday, February 13, saw swift sales and major placements by numerous exhibitors in the Galleries section of the fair. Younger and established galleries reported exceptional collector enthusiasm and interest in works presented, with many sold out presentations and numerous sales in the seven-figure range.
The fair also presented the first Focus LA section in the galleries tent, providing a platform for emerging Los Angeles spaces that have been open 15 years or fewer, underlining Frieze’s commitment to the city’s vibrant cultural landscape. Château Shatto had a sold out booth with works by Aria Dean and Helen Johnson.

FRIEZE LA

Frieze Los Angeles returns with an ambitious lineup of performances, installations and new commissions that take inspiration from the fair’s new location of Santa Monica Airport and the city’s cultural legacies.

This year Frieze Projects features two site-specific strands of programming: ‘Now Playing‘, a collaboration with Art Production Fund, onsite at the fair; and ‘Against the Edge‘, an expanded series of projects curated by Jay Ezra Nayssan and Del Vaz Projects installed in culturally significant sites across the westside of Los Angeles.

‘Now Playing’ at Santa Monica Airport
February 16–19, 2023

Art Production Fund’s ‘Now Playing’ brings together a series of artworks that shine a light on the often-overlooked elements of everyday life in Los Angeles; the vehicles, street food, sports, aircraft, construction sites and deeper histories that blend into the background. The artists featured in ‘Now Playing’ provide a lens through which we can see these quotidian details anew; ever present but unseen, that make Los Angeles a city both complex and beloved. ‘Now Playing’ receives support from Art of Recovery, an initiative of the City of Santa Monica Cultural Affairs. Participating artists in ‘Now Playing’ include Autumn Breon, Chris Burden, Jose Dávila, Basil Kincaid, Divya Mehra, Ruben Ochoa, Alake Shilling and Jennifer West.
