Clockwise from upper left: Emma Goldman, Nina Simone, Walt Whitman, card back, James Baldwin, Marcel Duchamp, Angela Davis, card back, Henry Geldzehler, Margaret Cho. The deck was inspired by famed Greenwich Village jazz and comedy club the Village Gate. Over the course of its 35 year history, the 3-story club hosted everyone from Nina Simone to Noam Chomsky, Richard Pryor to the Velvet Underground.
ART TODAY 022818 En Route to Père Lachaise – the extraordinary illustrative mastery of Rob Sussman
En Route to Père Lachaise – Interminable pointillist odyssey. I'd returned to LA from three weeks in Asia where, in the ancient city of Luoyang, capital of numerous Chinese dynasties, I had a kind of existential meltdown/breakthrough. All sorts of arbitrary habits and assumptions were thrown into high relief. I was drunk and felt like I was facing death. What Saul Bellow described as the dark backing of a mirror.
ART TODAY 022718 Ave E by Rob Sussman – A stippled and unrequited mating dance
Drawn in the dead of summer for the daughter of a friend I was courting — unsuccessfully — this was an attempt at being a peacock for her mom. A stippled and unrequited mating dance.
ART TODAY 022618 All Gates Open inspired by a David Lynch talk on ‘where great ideas from’ – Acrostic Interview starts today
Though named after a song by Can, I drew this upon hearing David Lynch talk about where great ideas come from. "Trillions and zillions of ideas," he said, "and they’re all there, waiting to be caught." I wanted to communicate that sense of abundance — a kind of blossoming, voluptuous life force. Fertility run amok.
ART TODAY 022518 Rob Sussman Art: Behind The Eyes, Snap Your Fingers by Chris Bonno
Backstory, Rob Sussman: Based off a quick sketch, this was my deepest exploration of graphite to date – pushing the tones as I exaggerated the features, integrating the levity of content into the process, and relaxing a bit to allow for a certain, simple harmony of elements.

A couple teachers at Otis and SVA, my girlfriend, my mom, lots of amazing friends. Some favorite illustrators are Drew Friedman, Chris Ware, Zoe Matthiessen, Henrik Drescher.
Paul Torres’ self portrait and Acrostic Interview – His canvas tells the stories of Life
The best advice that I’ve been given is to work from Life a lot. A lot of Life drawing sketches because that’ll give you a good solid knowledge of reality, but at the same time work from your imagination and try to be honest and genuine with your vision. Own what you do.
ART TODAY 022318 Chris Bonno recommends Paul Torres in a review of an art piece from his personal collection
His portraits have a sensuality to them and he clearly knows how to do a more traditional portrait (that can be stunning to observe) with excellent paint technique, volume, and creative use of color. Mostly, I see the creations, the people, the personalities, the vibe, the time he captures and the core or heart of his subjects. As a spectator, I am “let in" on how Torres’ cares for his work and his subjects. He creates an atmosphere while capturing the heart and attitude of the characters that we see around us but might not closely observe. By Chris Bonno

My favorite medium is oil painting but I also do a lot of color pencil, marker, acrylic, oil, pastels... a little bit of everything. I always end up with oils or sometimes I just do everything in oils from the start.

The best advice that I’ve been given is to work from Life a lot. A lot of Life drawing sketches because that’ll give you a good solid knowledge of reality, but at the same time work from your imagination and try to be honest and genuine with your vision. Own what you do.
