From December 9, 2016 to March 6, 2017, “Bedroom in Arles” by Vincent van Gogh will be on view at the Norton Simon Museum. The painting, one of three depictions of Van Gogh’s bedroom, will be on loan from the Art Institute of Chicago.
“Bedroom” was painted in 1889 in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence at the Saint-Paul Asylum, where Van Gogh checked himself in as a patient. His aim was for the painting to “rest the mind, or rather, the imagination,” written in a letter to his brother. The bedroom’s pale blue walls, pastel-green-and-rust floors, and fluffy pillows suggested this was a place where Van Gogh felt at peace.
This will be the first time that “Bedroom” will be on display on the West Coast. The Norton Simon Museum already owns several Van Gogh pieces, including “Portrait of the Artist’s Mother,” “Portrait of a Peasant,” and “The Mulberry Tree.”
The Norton Simon Museum is located at 411 W. Colorado Blvd. Pasadena, CA 91105.
