The Free Spirits, Fourth Way, and other musicians such as Gary Burton, Steve Marcus, and Larry Coryell were the initial pioneers of Jazz fusion. They began incorporating rock into their jazz recordings in the late 1960s before Miles Davis’ release of the Grammy winner “Bitches Brew” in 1971.
